Uki Village

at the base of Mt Warning in the Tweed Valley, Tweed Coast Hinterland, Northern Rivers region of the Far North Coast NSW, Australia

Fifteen minutes drive from the centre of Murwillumbah on the far North Coast of NSW, Australia, lies the small village of Uki. Famous for it's population of people seeking alternative lifestyles, artisans and close proximity to the base of Mt Warning, the eroded central chamber of the world's largest extinct shield volcano and the spot where it is said the dawn sun first touches Eastern Australia.

Built on the banks of the south arm of the Tweed River, Uki Village is also close to Clarrie Hall Dam, a local beauty spot and water supply for the people of the Tweed Valley.

The Naming of Uki

Uki - pronounced Yook-eye - is said have derived it's name from the Aboriginal name for the edible root of an swamp fern found in the area. Another explanation is that the name derived from the the UK1 symbol (meaning U.K. first quality) the early timber getters in the area would mark on the first grade logs that were to be sent for export to the United Kingdom.

Activities permitted on Clarrie Hall Dam include canoeing, boating (electric motor, sail or paddle power only) and fishing. The Dam is stocked with Australian Bass and an annual fishing competition is organised and run by the Australian Bass Association.

Clarrie Hall Dam also supports several significant bird species, including the vulnerable comb-crested jacana (Irediparra gallinacea) and the endangered black-necked stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus).

The Recreation Area is perfect for photography, bird watching, nature observation, environmental studies, picnicking and bush walking.
